People in Franchising is brought to you by Suzie McCafferty, CEO at Platinum Wave Franchising and David Kaye, Partner at Harper MacLeod LLP law firm. People in Franchising brings together guests from across the franchising community to discuss the latest news and developments in our industry whilst sharing our insights and advice for franchisors, franchisees, entrepreneurs and the wider business world. Now more than ever, we need to come together as a community and build on the already outstanding support network in the franchising industry. Having recently launched our Franchise Advisory Board group and weekly call, we wanted to open up our expertise even further to the wider franchise and business community all over the world. People in Franchising aims to provide valuable insight, advice and interesting discussion from experienced franchise professionals to help support the community during this challenging time, and to thrive beyond it.

Episode 1with Freddie St George

On the very first episode of People in Franchising, we introduce you to our hosts and welcome our first guest, Freddie St George, MD at Raring2go, a resource for families and children with 45 franchise units across the UK. We discuss the challenges of the current time and how Freddie has overcome these alongside the invaluable support of the franchise community.


Episode 2 with Jon White

On the second episode of People in Franchising, we are joined with our guest Jon White, UK Manager Director at InXpress, a global shipping franchise organisation delivering great carrier solutions to small and medium sized businesses. We find out what's been happening in Jon's world over the past few months and gain an insight into what the plans are for the business moving forward.


Episode 3 with Sir Robin Miller

Suzie and David welcome businessman, Sir Robin Miller on to the show. Sir Robin Miller started his career as a journalist before moving on to management, becoming non-executive Chairman of Emap plc, where he first worked as a reporter. Since venturing into management, Sir Robin Miller has been appointed non-executive Director and Chairman of HMV and non-executive Chairman of Edge Performance VCT plc. 


Episode 4 with Claire O'Connor

On episode 4 of People in Franchising, our hosts Suzie and David catch up with Claire O'Connor, CEO of the dance franchise babyballet. babyballet has achieved impressive growth since 2005 and now has 83 franchisees across the UK running around 2,000 classes a week for 25,000 children. The company has also gone global with licences in Singapore and Australia. 


Episode 5 with Ian Adie

This week, Suzie and David welcome Ian Adie, Managing Director of The BiGroup, one of Scotland's leading event merchandising provider. Suzie first met Ian a few years back when he was a guest speaker at the Scottish Franchise Week Business Breakfast. Now, as a guest on People on Franchising, Ian chats a bit about his experience in the world of business. 


Episode 6 with Denise Hutton-Gosney

On episode 6 of People in Franchising, Denise Hutton-Gosney, Founder and Managing Director of Razzamataz Theatre Schools joins Suzie and David. With a passion for performing arts, Denise founded Razzamataz in 2000 in Penrith, Cumbria. In 2007, the business entered the spotlight when Denise appeared on Dragons' Den and was backed by Duncan Bannatyne, helping the business grow into an award winning franchise network of more than 40 schools across the UK. Razzamataz is now a long-time client and friend of Platinum Wave.


Episode 7 with Dr Katie Morris

Dr Katie Morris, Clinical Psychologist and Franchisor for The Purple House clinic joins Suzie and David this week. The Purple House Clinic is a group of private psychology clinics located in England and Scotland. Its first founding practice was established in 2013 in Loughborough, Leicestershire. From here, the business grew a large client base and gained a reputation across the East Midlands as a high quality provider of psychological services. Since 2013, three more extremely successful franchised practices have been established, located in Leicester, Lincoln and Glasgow. Dr Katie Morris joins our hosts to chat about her background in psychology, what attracted her to franchising and how she has been managing her own mental wellbeing throughout lockdown.


Episode 8 with Ken Deary

This week on People in Franchising, Suzie is joined by CEO of Right at Home UK, Ken Deary.

Right at Home UK is one of the world’s most trusted care companies and an award-winning franchise. Through its global network of over 600 locally owned and operated offices, it helps thousands of people every day to continue living happily and independently in their own homes.

Suzie has been Non Executive Director of Right at Home UK since 2017, working closely with Ken and the Executive Board. Ken joins Suzie to chat about his journey into the world of franchising and what it's been like for the franchise being on the frontline during the pandemic.


Episode 9 with John Overdijking

On episode 9 of People in Franchising, our hosts Suzie and David welcome John Overdijking, Regional Business Development Manager for Scotland and Northern England at Driving Miss Daisy UK. Driving Miss Daisy provides assisted transportation and companionship to any age group or anyone who wants to get out and about and needs more than what other transport providers can offer. John joins our hosts to chat about how Driving Miss Daisy UK came around and how he got involved, the challenges the franchise has experienced during the coronavirus pandemic and what inspires him. 


Episode 10 with Pip Wilkins

Our hosts, Suzie and David are thrilled to welcome Pip Wilkins, bfa CEO, on to the tenth episode of People in Franchising. Pip has over 20 years' experience in franchising, starting her journey at just 19 years old as an administrator for the bfa. Pip worked her way up the ladder, working in different areas such as events, business services and operations before becoming the bfa’s first female CEO in 2016. Listen to Pip on this week's podcast chat about her journey into franchising, future plans plus much more. 


Episode 11 with Sarah Cressall

Suzie and David are thrilled to welcome Sarah Cressall, author, speaker, founder of the UK’s leading Creative Activity Business, The Creation Station, and a much loved personality in the franchising scene. Whilst working on Operations Raleigh in Zimbabwe helping local women run their own creative businesses, Sarah Cressall realised just how passionate she was about this. Upon her return home in 2002, Sarah established what would be a multi award-winning arts and crafts franchise with over 100 franchise owners. Not only is Sarah a multi award-winning entrepreneur, she’s also an author who’s book, Creative Sparks, shot to number one in its Amazon category, and an experienced keynote speaker at a variety of conferences, creative events and franchise events such as Franchise Fest.


Episode 12 with Rebecca Bonnington

Our hosts Suzie and David are delighted to welcome Rebecca Bonnington, CEO & Co-Founder of the management consultancy, Tricres. A successful business owner for over twenty years, Rebecca is an award-winning director with a wealth of experience in sales, executive coaching, business consulting and coaching, and corporate training. She’s been personally endorsed by Dr Richard Bandler, the co-creator of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), and is the author of the acclaimed guide to getting ahead in your career, ‘How to Outshine the Rest’. In this week's podcast, Rebecca chats about the background of Tricres, the business she formed with her brother, what she looks for in a business leader and offers advice to budding franchisees.

Episode 13 with Sarah Pavlou

Suzie and David are delighted to welcome Sarah Pavlou, Programme Director, Scale Up North East from RTC North, on to this week's episode. RTC North is 'a hidden gem in the northeast of England' as described by Sarah. The company successfully delivers a mix of innovation and business growth programmes, designed to help businesses to innovate, compete and grow. Sarah has worked for RTC North for 2 years, having followed a career of franchising. On this week's episode, Sarah chats about her role within the business.


Episode 14 with Lisa Raynes

Suzie and David are delighted to have Lisa Raynes as a guest on episode 14 of People in Franchising. Lisa Raynes is the Founder of Pride Road, Architectural Franchise. Having clocked up over a decade of professional experience in a larger practice environment, Lisa Raynes decided back in 2009 that it was time to strike out on her own. In episode 14, Lisa Raynes discusses her career background and how she eventually ventured into the world of franchising, how the pandemic has impacted the franchise and hopes for the future.


Episode 15 with Lee Foster

On episode 15 of People in Franchising, Suzie chats with Lee Foster, Owner and Founder of Revitalise...Connecting People. Lee has over 30 years experience in business development in the hospitality, motor and travel industries and now runs his own networking business with Revitalise Connecting People Limited. Revitalise Connecting People is all about supporting SME, solopreneurs, business leaders and business entrepreneurs, from across Scotland, UK and Globally.


Episode 16 with Anna Holness

We are delighted to be joined by Anna Holness, VP of Business Development, International Merchant Solutions at Worldpay. Anna has had a long career in technology and business, having worked at Ionica, a telecom provider, before joining 02 as an Account Director. During her time at 02, Anna climbed the career ladder, becoming Head of Franchise before leaving in 2019 to join Worldpay. At Worldpay, Anna leads a world class sales team to help advance the way the world pays, banks and invests.


Episode 17 with Helen Mansfield

Suzie is joined by Helen Mansfield, Managing Director for EWIF (Encouraging Women into Franchising). Helen is a young female with a passion for franchising and women in business. Helen’s dedication to the cause and understanding of the industry is the perfect combination to lead EWIF into the future and allow the organisation to become even more progressive and inspiring. On episode 17 of People in Franchising, Helen gives us an insight into the EWIF mission


Episode 18 with Nigel Apperley, CEO of Trustist

Nigel Apperley, started Trustist in August 2014. At the time he was the director of E-commerce at Kwik-Fit and has held senior positions at Slendertone, Waterford Wedgwood Royal Doulton and Canon Europe. Nigel also started Internet Cameras Direct in 1999 and grew the business from nothing to a turnover of over £20m before selling to a French company. Trustist is very active in the franchise sector and is and Official Partner of the Approved Franchise Association and Ambassador for Encouraging Women into Franchising.

Episode 19 with Neil Randall, CEO Anytime Fitness

Our hosts, Suzie McCafferty and David Kaye welcome Featuring Neil Randall, CEO of Anytime Fitness, on to episode 19 of People in Franchising.Anytime Fitness is a franchise of 24/7 health and fitness clubs. It first opened here in the UK over 10 years ago and is the world’s largest health chain with over 4,500 clubs open in 35 countries and growing.
